Very good questions. Thanks.

See, it is very efficient to transport huge amounts of goods via sea. But if the sea routes are controlled by unfriendly states, your trade can be disconnected whenever these unfriendly states want. We see it, when the Americans confiscating ships or tankers of states, that do not comply to their "rules based international order". Best example are the seizures of Iranian vessels either directly by the US or on their behalf by other countries. Recently by Greece.

The alternative would be to transport these goods via land. This would be possible if the whole heartland would be united. Hence, you see the efforts of the Chinese, to develop the new silk road. Or the "Belt and road initiative". Here the Chinese will be able to trade with the whole heartland, without the fear, that their commercial vessels could be interrupted in case of conflict with America. Nevertheless, such land transport routes are not the most efficient ones. They can be, if by rail. On road it is rather less efficient. That's why many new rail routes are being built as well.

America of course kept the whole heartland, for many reasons, this is only one of many, in a constant state of conflict, war and suffering. To make it impossible, to trade between the East and West heartland and thereby forcing the East and West powers, to trade via sea, which is controlled by the biggest fleet on earth. The US Navy.

Is it still the biggest fleet? Maybe. Maybe the Chinese are already bigger. You see? China is gearing up, to protect its trade routes. I will cover this in more detail in my article about Asia, which will be released sometime during 2023.
