Even if Russia were to withdraw from all formerly Ukrainian territory today, the West would not make peace but would demand more.

What Russia sees as reasonableness and humanitarianism, the West sees as contemptible weakness.

For better or worse, the West's undisguised habit of sponsoring terrorists and neo-nazis, and giving them wide latitude to do the predictable, have started to cure the RF government of such misconceptions

I have seen no evidence of this.

That Russia is still talking what is in essence a Minsk-3 should tell you how little stomach Russia has for this fight.

Expand full comment

I respectfully disagree that they have little stomach for the fight. This is a war of attrition against a people they essentially consider to be Russian, as Aleks has pointed out before. They're trying to preserve what civilian life and property they can, demilitarizing the equipment and taking on as many POWs as will surrender, even advertising a radio frequency to call to surrender. Any opportunity they have to wipe out the Azov battalions and foreign mercs, they take with relish. Minsk-1 and Minsk-2 were a mistake of trusting the West. They won't make that mistake again. Having read Putin's address in full, he's got much bigger things on his mind, and I think the BRICS+ will succeed in this.

The Ukrainians obviously don't see it that way, at leastif membership in The Club is dangled out.

At risk of repeating myself- does Russia want to be nice or does Russia want to win? Because their enemies will not hesitate to play dirty.

Be patient my friend. We can not know what people who lead Russia know and want. We are all impatiently waiting for good outcome of this conflict, hoping the good will prevail. But it's a hard fight. The evil side also has some smart people among themselves. I'm sure it would be done quickly if it was possible to do it safely for the world and humanity.

"The Ukrainian people need to know that the deaths of their relatives could end tomorrow if their government enters negotiations. The “government,” of course, can’t since it is controlled by the West."

Everyone in Ukraine already knows this and has known it for a long time. Nobody will ask them their opinion, any more than farmers ask veal calves their preferences.

That's what King George III thought.

King George didn't have a secret police, nor could he dangle out membership in The Club as a reward for staying the course.

@Feral Finster

King George absolutely had state secret service/intelligence. Every monarch since Queen Elizabeth has, the world's longest continuous national intelligence apparatus, AFAIK.

Odessa. Odessa! Toujours Odessa!! All roads lead to Odessa.

Odessa is the fulcrum. Odessa is in the linchpin. Odessa is the key to eastern Europe (sans the stupid Baltics).

Odessa and Buda-Pest! Odessa and Bratislava. Because Odessa is Trans-Nistra!

Odessa is Crimea. Odessa is the Black Sea. Odessa is Sebastopol.

Odessa is Novorossiya.

Aleks, seems to me that you are right here in the sense that the Russian narrative now is to convince the Ukrainian people/military that they are being used. Of course they will never be able to persaude all of them, but there may come a tipping point when there is a [reverse colour] revolution?

And I think the UAF is sufferring c 2,000 casualties per day just now. I am using a rule of thumb that every "front" the RF opens costs the UAF c 1,000 per day. So I expect now another front to open, maybe two or three. My personal opinion is that this thing will approach a crisis much sooner than most think - my guess is by September. And all the wunderwaffe in the world won't change this.

Rest assured the West will never negotiate if it imagines there is half a chance to attack and degrade Russia. The UK ruling class is obsessed with defeating Russia in the context of the systemic threat to the provenance of the West’s Finance Capitalist System and relegation of the western elites to a sideshow. Their panic is betrayed by their lack of any calculated risk aversion or assessment, fortunately for us brainwashed sheep in the UK ignorant and uncaring the World’s premier leader and diplomat Vladimir Putin is at the helm, steering us all through the most dangerous and turbulent days at stake no less is the survival of the species. No thanks or kudos to the Western elites distinguished by their avarice and contempt for the rest of us!

The Russian leadership does not want this war. They were given no choice. It's existential. However, they are not "desperate". That's the current issue. No one is desperate enough...yet. Want to bet on who goes "desperate" first?

Does Russia want to be nice or do they want to win? As it is, all they are doing is getting people killed for no good reason.

Expand full comment

@Feral Finster

That smells a bit like concern trolling.

Russia appears not to want indiscriminate killing of their close relatives and has some interest in (quickly as possible) re establishing political & economic stability in the areas they will assimilate. As opposed to our US general tactics of "it blowed up real big, then well connected people in our private sector skimmed the reconstruction money off while not doing much actual reconstructing".

This is far from concern trolling. Look at how Russia treated the insurgency in Chechnya. They were not nice in their pacification efforts.
